La Gioconda

The piece I chose is; La Gioconda, also known as Mona Lisa. In this painting appears the wife of Francesco del Giocondo, although there are several assumptions about her identity. The piece has dimensions of 76.7 x 53 cm. The Gioconda was painted by Leonardo da Vinci, renowned painter, engineer and sculptor.

Da Vinci painted the mona lisa between 1503 and 1505 and is said that it was one of his favorite works, because he used to take it with him alwas he travelled. Leonardo painted this work during his Florentine period; in this time, he painted many portraits, but the Gioconda is the only preserved.

The main attractive of this portrait, and one of the reasons why it is famous, is because of her smile, which is qualified as enigmatic. Instead of the technique used in the eyes, which seems to follow to whom is looking at it across the room. This work is on display at the Louvre, in Paris.

According to Sart, we must appreciate the work, evoking what we feel when we see it, and looking for what represents for us, so we must see beyond the Gioconda, this is especially important in this work, because it is the reason for its fame; we can see the feelings that it expresses, the expression on her face; in particular her smile. Personally, I believe that La Gioconda is highly important piece for her time, with her, the techniques of the realism are strongly defined and there’re new techniques for the art too, however, I personally believe that there are best pieces. I love the realism and the enigma of her expression, but I think it is a very austere painting, which, by the way, characterizes that time.

Instead, from point of view of Ingarden, La Gioconda is a work of art in itself; the aesthetic values that possesses are very beautiful and has a few details that make it very special, it's almost like see a picture carefully taken, in which the model expressed an intriguing gesture.
My view, as already mentioned, La Gioconda is a work of art, thanks to its detailed expression and techniques that I talked about earlier.

  1. It is a magnificent work of art indeed.
a whole tesis could be made out of every detail, and every possible interpretation.
I think art is that wonderful because it doesn't mean the same to all of us, it's never the same, depending on whom appreciates it, it's the way it is, and so, it's always new, fresh, different.
